5 Mil vs 12 Mil Anodized Aluminum Asset Tags

A same-size comparison for buyers choosing between thinner aluminum and a stiffer plate, with an 8 mil middle option.

Published Jul 2026 By the IronMarks team

The same footprint can feel like a different part when the aluminum thickness changes.

This comparison holds the size at 0.75 x 1.5 inches (19 x 38 mm). The 5 mil and 12 mil Products use anodized aluminum and list the same mounting choices. Thickness, stiffness and displayed price are the main differences.

Choose 5 mil when the surface needs some conformity

Five mil aluminum is the thinner option. It is easier to fit to a gentle curve and keeps a lower profile after mounting. The current 5 mil Product also has the lowest displayed tiers among the same-size examples.

Use a sample before production if the curve is tight, the surface is textured or the tag may bridge a raised feature.

Choose 12 mil when a stiffer plate is the priority

Twelve mil aluminum is 0.3 mm thick in the current Product. It stays flatter before mounting and feels closer to a plate. This can suit a defined label area on equipment, especially when the tag is fixed with holes, rivets or screws.

The added material also changes the price. Compare unit and total price at the quantity you expect to order rather than comparing only the lowest “from” price.

Use 8 mil as the middle option

The current 8 mil Product uses the same 0.75 x 1.5 inch footprint. It is the practical midpoint when 5 mil feels too flexible and 12 mil is more plate than the application needs.

What thickness does not decide

Thickness does not confirm adhesive performance, artwork fit or scan quality on the installed asset. Those depend on the surface, placement, data density and final layout.

Send the exact text, barcode or QR data for the digital proof. If mounting is uncertain, request samples and test the planned location before approving the production specification.

Frequently asked questions

Is 12 mil aluminum always the better choice?
No. Twelve mil is stiffer, but a 5 mil tag can fit better when the surface has a gentle curve or when a thinner profile is preferred. Choose from the surface and mounting method, not thickness alone.
Do the 5 mil and 12 mil examples use the same size?
Yes. The Products compared here use a 0.75 x 1.5 inch (19 x 38 mm) rectangular footprint, which keeps the thickness and price comparison on the same size.
Can both thicknesses use adhesive or mounting holes?
Yes. The current 5 mil and 12 mil Products in this comparison list adhesive and mounting holes. Confirm the final mounting setup on the quote.
Should I test a sample before ordering?
Test a sample when the asset is curved, textured, frequently handled or cleaned. Mount the sample in the planned position and check edge lift, plate fit and code scanning.
