Asset Tag Installation and Surface Preparation Guide

Prepare the asset surface, choose adhesive or mechanical mounting, and test uncertain surfaces before a production run.

Steps

  1. Inspect the actual mounting surface. Record whether it is flat or curved, smooth or textured, clean or contaminated, and whether drilling is allowed. Note coatings, repeated cleaning and any unusual temperature or chemical exposure.
  2. Choose adhesive or mechanical mounting. Use the Product mounting options as the starting point. Adhesive needs clean contact area. Holes with screws or rivets need an approved hole pattern and fastener specification.
  3. Clean and dry the surface. Remove dust, oil, release agents and cleaner residue with a method that is compatible with the asset. Let the area dry before installation.
  4. Dry fit the tag. Check clearance, orientation, scan access, edge contact and hole alignment before removing a liner or drilling the asset.
  5. Install without bending or bridging. Apply adhesive with firm, even pressure across the contact area, or install approved screws or rivets without bowing the plate.
  6. Protect and inspect the installation. Follow the confirmed adhesive dwell or cure instructions before cleaning or loading the tag. Check edge lift, plate movement, fastener security and barcode or QR access.

Start with the asset surface. It determines whether adhesive or mechanical mounting is the safer choice.

The Product page lists the available mounting options. Use those options as the boundary for the quote. If the surface, fastener or exposure falls outside that list, request a quote with a photo and surface details.

Do not treat the table as a bond guarantee. The final choice depends on the exact Product, adhesive and asset surface.

Prepare the surface before any installation

  1. Remove loose dust and debris.
  2. Remove oil, grease, release agents and old adhesive residue with a cleaner approved for the asset finish.
  3. Remove cleaner residue. Let the surface dry.
  4. Keep fingers, gloves and tools from transferring oil back to the prepared area.
  5. Install soon enough that the area does not collect new dust or condensation.

Paint, powder coat, plastics, rubber, silicone, waxed finishes and textured surfaces can change adhesion. Test the exact surface instead of using a clean metal panel as a substitute.

Dry fit before you attach or drill

Hold the tag in position with the adhesive liner still attached. Check that the whole back can contact the asset and that the tag does not bridge a raised feature, seam or recess.

Confirm the viewing and scanning angle. Leave clearance for doors, vents, handles and service panels. For plates with holes, verify the finished hole spacing against the asset or drawing before drilling.

Adhesive-backed tags

Use adhesive where the Product lists it and the surface gives the tag enough clean contact area.

  1. Confirm the surface is clean and dry.
  2. Mark the position after the dry fit.
  3. Peel the liner without touching the adhesive.
  4. Place one edge first, then lower the tag onto the surface without trapping debris or air.
  5. Apply firm, even pressure across the face and edges.
  6. Keep the tag from cleaning, movement or load until the confirmed dwell or cure period has passed.

The required pressure, application temperature and dwell or cure time depend on the adhesive and substrate. They must come from the approved specification, not a universal rule.

Mounting holes

Use holes when the Product lists them and the asset has an existing pattern or approved drilling location.

  1. Dry fit the finished tag or an approved drawing.
  2. Mark the hole centers and confirm clearance behind the surface.
  3. Obtain the asset owner’s approval before drilling. Use the site’s drilling and deburring procedure.
  4. Remove chips and debris, then align the tag without forcing it over misaligned holes.
  5. Check that the plate sits flat before installing the fastener.

Do not drill housings, panels, pressure equipment or structural parts without the required engineering and site approval.

Screws

Screws suit installations that may need planned removal or service access.

  1. Match the screw, thread, head and backing method to the asset and hole pattern.
  2. Start all screws before final tightening so the plate can align naturally.
  3. Tighten evenly. Stop if the plate bows, twists or pulls into a recess.
  4. Use the site’s approved locking method when vibration is part of the application.

Torque and locking requirements depend on the fastener and asset. Confirm them with the equipment owner.

Rivets

Rivets suit fixed mechanical mounting where routine removal is not required.

  1. Confirm rivet diameter, material and grip range for the joined thicknesses.
  2. Align the plate and support it so setting the rivet does not bend the tag.
  3. Set the rivets in the approved sequence for the plate size and hole pattern.
  4. Inspect each head and the back of the joint where accessible.

Rivet selection is part of the installation design. The tag specification alone does not determine the correct rivet.

Pressure and cure handling

Pressure-sensitive adhesive needs full contact. Press across the entire tag, not only the center. Pay attention to corners and edges, where incomplete contact usually appears first.

After application, protect the tag for the dwell or cure period stated for the approved adhesive. Avoid cleaning, peeling checks, impact or cable load during that period. Ask for the exact instruction if it is not shown on the quote.

Curved, textured and uncertain surfaces

Thin film and thinner aluminum can follow a gentle curve more easily than a rigid plate. Tight curves reduce contact area and put stress on the edges. A rigid plate should sit flat or use an approved mechanical or formed mounting solution.

Request samples before a full run when the surface is curved, textured, powder-coated, oily, exposed to condensation, repeatedly cleaned or made from a low-energy plastic. Test the planned location and cleaning process.

Removal limits

Permanent adhesive can leave residue, damage a coating or deform the tag during removal. Do not assume a removed tag can be reused. Removable adhesive is available only where the Product lists it, and it still requires testing on painted or sensitive finishes.

Screws allow planned removal when the asset and fastener design support it. Rivet removal normally changes the fastener and may affect the hole. Follow the asset owner’s removal procedure.

What to send with an installation question

Include a clear surface photo, asset material or coating, flat or curved condition, cleaning process, planned tag size, mounting preference and whether drilling is allowed. Add any unusual temperature, chemical, washdown or vibration exposure. These details let the quote confirm the mounting option without inventing a universal adhesive rule.

Frequently asked questions

How long should an adhesive asset tag cure before use?
There is no universal cure or dwell time. It depends on the exact adhesive, asset surface and application conditions. Use the time stated on the approved quote or adhesive specification, and ask us to confirm it when the surface or exposure is unusual.
Can I apply an adhesive tag to an oily or textured surface?
Do not assume it will bond. Remove oil and residue with a cleaner that is compatible with the asset, then test the exact tag on the exact surface. Use mechanical mounting or request a recommendation if the surface cannot be cleaned or remains heavily textured.
Can a metal asset tag follow a curved surface?
Thin aluminum can follow a gentle curve more easily than a rigid plate, but the fit depends on the radius and contact area. Do not force a rigid plate against a tight curve. Request samples or a custom mounting recommendation.
Should I use screws or rivets?
Use screws when planned removal or service access matters and the asset accepts the selected fastener. Rivets suit a fixed installation when the joint, hole size and grip range are approved. The asset owner should approve drilling and the fastener specification.
Will removable adhesive leave no residue?
