Barcode vs QR Code vs RFID Asset Tags: Which to Choose

All three turn a physical asset into something you can scan and track — they differ in how you read them, how much they carry, and what they cost. Here’s how to choose without over-buying.

When each wins

• 1D barcode — the workhorse. Cheapest, universally supported, and ideal when staff scan items one at a time at check-in or maintenance. A great default for most fixed-asset and IT programs.
• QR code — choose it when you want a phone (not a dedicated scanner) to open a record, manual or form. Excellent for field teams and self-service audits; holds more data than a 1D barcode.
• RFID — choose it when you must read many assets quickly without line of sight — high-volume warehouse or tool-room audits. It costs more per tag and needs a reader, so reserve it for where bulk reading pays back.

Durability is a separate decision

The code and the material are independent choices. A QR code laser-etched into 304 stainless is both scannable and near-indestructible; the same QR on indoor film is fine for an office laptop. Pick the code for your workflow, then pick the material for the environment.
