- What are asset tags?
- Asset tags are durable ID labels or plates fixed to equipment, tools and IT hardware to identify and track each item. Each tag carries a unique marking — an asset number, barcode, QR code or serial — that ties the physical item to a record in your asset register or CMMS.
- How do asset tags work?
- Each tag holds a unique identifier. Staff scan the barcode or QR code (or read the printed number) at check-in, audit or maintenance, and your system updates that asset's location, owner or service history. The tag is the physical link between an item and its digital record.
- What are asset tags used for?
- Fixed-asset audits, IT inventory, equipment maintenance, tool control, warranty and calibration tracking, and ownership/anti-theft marking. Any time you need to reliably tell one item from another and log activity against it.
- What material should I choose?
- Match the environment. Anodized aluminum suits most indoor and office use; 304 stainless steel handles heat, chemicals, outdoor and washdown; polyester and vinyl are lower-cost for controlled indoor assets. See our materials guide for a full comparison.
- Can asset tags be tamper-evident?
- Yes. Tamper-evident tags fracture or leave a VOID pattern if removed, so an item can't be quietly re-tagged. Metal tags can also be permanently marked and mechanically fastened for high-security assets.
- How are asset tags marked?
- Metal tags are laser-etched, engraved, anodized-printed or dot-peened for permanence. Film tags are printed and sealed. All methods support custom text, logos, 1D/2D barcodes, QR codes and sequential serial numbers from an Excel/CSV file.
