Asset Tags for IT Equipment & Laptops: What Works

IT hardware is high-value, portable and frequently reassigned — which makes it the classic case for asset tagging, and one with a few specific requirements. Here’s what actually works on laptops, servers and peripherals.
Tamper-evident vs metal
- Tamper-evident film is the common choice for laptops and portable devices. If someone tries to peel it, it fractures or leaves a VOID pattern — so a device can’t be quietly re-tagged or resold. It’s thin, low-profile and doesn’t interfere with the chassis.
- Anodized aluminum or stainless plates suit fixed IT — server racks, network gear, lab equipment — where a permanent, mechanically robust tag makes sense.
Size, placement and surface
Laptops and peripherals have little flat space, so small footprints (roughly 1–1.5 in) and strong adhesive matter. Place tags where they’re visible for audit but clear of vents, ports and hinges. Avoid soft-touch or oily surfaces without cleaning first — adhesion is where IT tags most often fail.
QR or barcode?
For IT, QR codes are popular because any phone can open the device’s record — handy for helpdesk and floor audits. 1D barcodes stay ideal for fast handheld scanning during check-in/check-out. Either way, keep the human-readable asset number printed on the tag as a fallback.
A numbering scheme that survives refreshes
Use a stable, structured number (e.g. IT-LT-00001 for laptops) that stays with the record, not the model. Sequential ranges from your asset spreadsheet keep later hardware batches organized.
